100% of all public donations go towards caring for and ultimately finding loving, adoptive homes for horses and burros.

How to donate:

Remember that EVERY dollar helps get us that much closer to our goal! Donations can be accepted any or all of the following ways:

Items in Need:

Stall Shelters

This is our biggest need right now. We need 8 trussed shelters (no posts in the stall) which will cost $4,500. The shelters are required to keep the horses out of the sun and rain. Currently, we have to allow horses and burros to run together to have access to shelters on rainy or hot days. Ideally, each horse would have its own shelter so that we don’t have to worry about them getting hurt or churning up their stalls in wet weather. Our closest stall vendor is Cactus Corrals in Adelanto, CA. These are the shelters we intend to purchase: 8×24 Trussed Shelter . Unless otherwise requested by the donor, all donations will go towards purchasing these shelters. Excess funds will be used in one of the other areas specifically outlined below.

Feed Tubs

Qty Needed: 3

We currently have eight pens that don’t have feeders. The horses / burros housed in those stalls must eat off the floor. Having a feeder that can be easily removed during training is important. A feed tub like this one is big enough for their hay and prevents them from eating sand. Feed tubs are around $50 each. The size most useful for us is between 30 - 85 gallons. When we have a choice we really prefer rubber tubs over metal or plastic because they are easy to move and give if a wild horse runs into or steps on them. Metal tubs still workout just fine for burros and horses further along in the gentling process. New or used tubs appreciated as long as they are in good repair with no sharp edges.

Pipe Corrals

Qty Needed: 7

Our biggest limitation from being able to take on more animals for training is stall space. We are currently allocating all excess funds towards purchasing additional corrals. We have plenty of land but need additional panels and shelters. 6′ pipe corrals are required for wild horses. 5′ corrals for burros and gentled horses. With an additional seven corrals we could easily increase from being able to accept 4 horses to accepting 10 -12. And go from 6 burros to 8-10.

Each “add on” stall for a mustang costs around $860 for just the panels. The shelter would be $475 more. The estimated total expense for adding additional stalls would be $7910 for the panels and $3800 for the shelters. With the additional panels we would be able to triple the number of horses / burros we can take in at any one time and adoption numbers should see an increase as well!

Any donation amount helps. We can purchase as few as one corral at a time (3 panels). Slowly but surely we’ll get there!

Items Wanted:

Stall Toys

Qty Needed: 13

Stall toys encourage horses and burros to explore and provide enrichment when they are not being trained. Horses particularly go from being in a social environment at the BLM where they interact with up to 50 other horses daily to being confined in a 24 x 24 training stall. Stall toys help to alleviate boredom. We'd love to have one toy per stall available. Stall toys like the ones pictured cost around $16.00 each. We normally purchase them here: Horse.com

Buckets

Qty Needed: 6

Domesticated horses and burros often receive nutritional supplements and medication in buckets. In the wild, buckets don't exist. Horses and burros are often skeptical of buckets, supplemental feeds and treats. One of the things we try do do before they leave is make sure everybody will at least eat hay pellets out of a bucket. We also start them on beet pulp and rice bran which gets them used to a non-hay based feed. We do currently have a couple of buckets but we'd love to have one per animal / stall. The type of bucket pictured here is $10.00 each. We normally purchase them here: Horse.com

Halters

We can always use halters.

Rope halters and lead ropes are our primary training tool and we go through a lot of them. We don't care what color. New or used, but we can always use rope halters in good condition! We order halters new for around $5-6 each. We normally purchase them here: Horse.com

Lead Ropes

Leadropes can always be used.

Rope halters and lead ropes are our primary training tool and we go through a lot of them. We don't care what color. New or used, but we can always use lead ropes in good condition! We order lead ropes new for around $7-8 each. We do prefer lead ropes that are at least 6' in length. We LOVE this kind: Cowboy Braided Leadropes at Horse.com

Electrolytes

Electrolytes are another item we go through a lot and can always use more of. We routinely add powdered electrolytes to the water tubs to encourage electrolyte replacement. Especially in the summer. The brand / type / flavor is not important at all. The picture is just an example of one brand on the market.

Fly Masks

Fly masks can always be used.

We are lucky that we don't have a severe fly problem due to the open space we live in and daily cleaning of the stalls however, teaching horses to use and wear fly masks goes to help their transition to domestic life. Horses generally wear a medium size fly mask and burros generally wear arab or pony size masks depending on their size. We usually get our fly masks from Horse.com. New or used fly masks of any brand work just fine for us. Keep in mind the fly masks with "ears" dont fit burro ears.

Manure Forks

We don't go through these as often but always like to have a few spares on hand. We can use both replacement heads like you see here: Manure and Bedding Fork Replacement Head as well as the ones with the handle included as you see at your local tack shop. Metal or plastic heads work fine for us.

EZ Cart

We currently have one feed cart and one manure cart. As you can imagine having 15 BLM animals on site at any one time we generate a lot of POOP! Normally we can only have one person at a time cleaning because we only have one manure cart. If both Joe and I were able to clean at the same time we can get more training done. It is a win win! We use the large EZ Cart. You can find them at your local tack store (too large to ship) but they look like this: EZ Haul Carts

Salt / Mineral Blocks

Larger blocks preferred.

All of our horses and burros always have access to a mineral and/or salt block like the one pictured here. They REALLY like them! We purchase the 50lb trace mineral blocks like the one pictured for around $10 from our local feed store. We can ALWAYS use these. Any kind of salt / mineral block in any brand. The great thing about these blocks is they don't go bad or spoil!

We are a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Corporation

What does that mean? It means we don’t use your money to go on vacation, buy video games, or remodel our house. Your funds go directly towards the tools and resources we need to find horses and burros new homes.

What about Funding from the Mustang Heritage Foundation and Burro Incentive Program? Thanks to the Trainer Incentive Program and the Burro Incentive Program our horses and burros have all feed costs covered. We’ll never send out a “running out of hay” email. All the basic needs of the horses and burros are met.

How can you help? Even though the basics are covered, we’d love to do more. Over 50 horses and burros found homes through our program in 2014 and almost as many in 2015. As of February 2016 we have placed over 125 horses and burros. We’d LOVE to see the total number of animals we personally place double in 2016. In order for that to happen our biggest need is corral space. Because wild horses require 24′ x 24′ pens 6′ tall it costs $1400 to add just one stall and shelter. Each stall can house up to 12 adoptable horses a year! So you can easily see that more stalls mean more animals find adopters.

There are also the little extras that you may not think about. Stall toys, feed and water bins, website hosting, advertisements and promotion, etc. Over the past two years we have self funded and, while we are able to get a lot done with the resources we have, every little bit helps. Our current list of items most wanted / needed is below. All donations received will go directly towards one of the items below.
